Wasserturm Hotel Cologne, Curio Collection by Hilton, integrated into the walls of what was once the largest castle in Europe.
brand has restored the prestige of an iconic Cologne hotel, housed in the huge water tower rising almost 30 metres into the heart of the Rhine city. The building dates back to the 1870s, was damaged during the Second World War and remained in ruins for a long time before the designer Andrée Putman took up the challenge of creating a luxury hotel in its round brick walls in the early 1990s. A unique hotel, frequented in its time by visiting stars, but which had experienced many ups and downs in recent years, including the abandonment of its starred restaurant due to lack of profitability and a sudden change of operator in 2018, before its closure in March 2020.
To make its entry into Hilton’s collection of independent, high-end hotels, the venue undertook several months of work. Now owned by Aroundtown, a listed real estate company, and operated by the CDH Group, the Wasserturm Hotel Cologne has retained its design essence. Its interiors have been redesigned by studio Goddard Littlefair, with the building’s historic stonework elegantly interacting with more contemporary touches.
Located on the Kaygasse, five minutes from the Rhine and the cathedral and ten minutes from the KölnMesse exhibition centre, the hotel is characterised by its 11-metre-high lobby, which is surrounded by a private garden that surrounds the hotel. The Wasserturm has seven meeting and event rooms with a total of 500 square metres of meeting space. An elevator through the 11 floors of the water tower serves the hotel’s 88 industrial chic rooms, the spa and the gym, and ends at the top with the Botanik Bar. For cocktails with a view.
I’m Michelle, and I love to travel. As a former hotel expert for one of the world’s largest hotel chains, I’ve stayed in nearly every type of room imaginable (including many that were not so desirable!). Nowadays, I am fortunate enough to be able to explore the world on my own terms. From international flights to learning different languages, there is nothing too far out of reach!
